What is a night market? As the day winds down and the sun sets, instead of heading home, many Taiwanese flock to its famed night markets – vibrant street markets that pop up after dark offering anything from food, clothing, massages, or gadgets! The noise and energy at night markets is infectious, with everyone looking for the best bargains and most delicious snacks (called 小吃 or "little eats"). Night markets are renowned for their huge selection of enticing Taiwanese snacks, including favorites like oyster omelettes, popcorn chicken, stinky tofu, and shaved ice!
How did night markets come to be?Taiwan's night markets first appeared in rural areas as markets where traveling merchants could come together and sell goods to residents. Since there were few permanent shops in rural areas, these periodical markets quickly became a popular staple for food, entertainment, medicines, and other goods. These festive street markets became popular as a place to eat and relax, and have evolved into the night markets we know and love today!

ABOUT
How did UW Night Market start?
The Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) first introduced Night Market in spring 2001 – a small but successful showcase of Taiwanese culture held in the HUB Ballroom. Since then, the event has grown tremendously, moving outdoors to the HUB Lawn in 2005 before settling at its now-iconic Red Square location in 2011. The festival has continued to grow, expanding to UW's historic Quad in 2016.
Since 2001, we've brought this delicious and dynamic culture to the University of Washington and it has quickly become an annual Seattle tradition. This year is no different; we are pleased to welcome you to our 22nd Annual UW Night Market! Whether you've been to Taiwan before, or have always been curious about Taiwanese culture, the UW Night Market offers a dazzling array of vendors, games, and entertainment that just might put Taiwan at the top of your next vacation destinations!
